Our next meeting will be Sunday 1st March 2026 at  12:30 Ben Basing will give a talk with the title “Artificial Intelligence is Impossible”  see his notes below

Like several members of this group I took a philosophy degree and remember some of it. I worked in IT from the eighties and lived with the actual and imagined possibilities and limitations of computer systems. The combination of these backgrounds, along with some ridiculous answers from ChatGPT, Copilot etc has led me to be very suspicious about the possibilities of Artificial Intelligence. As a philosopher I am keen to encounter objections or misconceptions of my views- so I bring them to the pub. I’ll introduce the session with a description of my point of view and then, in order to encourage contributions, I’ll run through a list of western philosophers I expect many of us to know and try to show that they would agree with me. I’m hoping to be proved wrong here, because I am aware that I hold two nearly contradictory views- how can a panpsychist think that no machine could be intelligent? All nicely muddled and looking for some philosophy of mind.

We meet in The Rose Battersea,  74-76 Battersea Bridge Road, London SW11 3AG but the meeting will also be on Zoom for details see SLPC Zoom Meeting

We always welcome new speakers. If you would like to give a talk on a philosopher or a philosophical topic please contact Adrian Carter at southlondonphilosophy@gmail.com
